VSŽ used to be an important Central European steel-making company. Penta entered it by purchasing 7.36 % of its shares and later increased its interest to 24.5 %. Penta implemented a large scale consolidation and restructuring of non-core assets and introduced a new strategy in legal matters which were a significant burden on VSŽ. Starting in 2003, Penta gained the position of majority shareholder and transformed the company to investment holding.
