Slovalco has been one of the iconic pillars of Slovak industry for decades. Since the first tonnes of aluminium were produced in Žiar nad Hronom in the 1950s, the plant has undergone extensive modernization, establishing itself among Europe’s most advanced aluminium producers.
Following Penta’s entry into the company in 2002, substantial investments were made to support both the plant’s development and its environmental transformation. Today, Penta holds a 44.7% stake in the company, while the majority shareholder is the Norwegian firm Norsk Hydro, one of the world’s leading aluminium producers. Thanks in large part to the cooperation of these two shareholders, Slovalco has become one of the most environmentally responsible aluminium producers in the world.
A clear example of this commitment was the €53 million remediation of the tailings pond, which eliminated one of Central Europe’s largest environmental burdens. In recognition of this achievement, Penta received the ENVIRO OSCAR award in 2012.
Although the production of primary aluminium ended in 2023, Slovalco continues to operate through aluminium recycling activities.
